Asfaleia reading the post I was reminded of an old philosophical disquisition: comes first the chicken or the egg? Comes before the first rice or folly? In short, the question is what is the cause and what is the effect. If you think we can rarely distinguish with certainty the effects of the cause, especially if both of the abstract nature soon. Of course we know that is the fire to generate smoke, or are the clouds to cause rain. But are we really sure? After all what can bring more knowledge to know that one thing comes before another, what matters is that there are both. A study of the relationships that actually are established between objects of knowledge, relationships that may not necessarily be traced to the a-priori model of cause and effect.
